about

[Child Ballad no. 1] This retelling of the medieval 'Riddles Wisely Expounded' is sung to a Scots melody called 'Our Rightful King.'About an enchanted king and three beautiful sisters, such figures seem plentiful enough in the Mojave around Death Valley. Think of Carlos Castaneda and his three witches.
Think of Charles Manson and his unholy harem. DNL bases his king on a desert rat he once met at Tacoma Hot Springs. The sisters could live up in the Panamints at Stella's Place (above). After cursing them with the curse of longing, he dances his lonesome dance to the piece DNL composed just before the recording session.

lyrics

Three sisters lived not long ago
and not so far away
in a house of desert stone they lived
In a house of desert stone.
